Mergulhadore on the wreck of the "Sinking of Santa Ewirges" |
The green seas Ceará have been topics for many writers and poets. However, the brownish-green color that often stays close to the coast of Ceará is characteristic of low visibility while underwater. To our luck at some times of year clearest waters reach our coastline revealing hidden mysteries for many years.
In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century the area where the hotel was built and the Marina Park site, today houses the Maritime Industry of Ceara - INACE was known as the Well of Draga. Fortress does not have adequate port facilities and that it functioned as a natural anchorage. Many boats of various sizes have ended his days there, unknowns.
And it was one of those wrecks that a team of Ceará Sea sank a vessel that has long forgotten are brought back to our history books. Steel structures are located in front of the statue of St. Hedwig, next to the hotel. The tip came from fishermen who have long known the place well and have reported the existence of "some scrap metal" in that area.
Mergulhadore between the "blades" propeller |
The area of \u200b\u200bthe debris extends about 30m long. The bow is facing the beach at an angle of about 60 degrees to starboard. The size of the partially buried helix coincides with the estimated length. The boat is completely destroyed but still some structures could be observed despite the poor visibility: bollards that are always left behind and are a good way to orient themselves in a shipwreck, structures of the rudder, keel and ribs.
The only reason the propeller was not taken by looters is he was not made of precious metals ie no commercial value. Part of its axis has also been identified, but none of its engines. The plates that formed the hull appear to have been welded and not nailed to studs, which give us a clue as to his age.
Lancets in wreck |
There is a high possibility that it was the steamer Rio Formoso, Pernambuco Company owned by the Navigation and ran aground in a beach in the vicinity of the "Port of Ceará" in 1913.
The marine life is shy, small lagostinhas, lancets and other small reef fish.
is important to remember that all shipwrecks hold a small part of the puzzle of our maritime history and should be preserved.
