Uncover plot that defrauded millions of dollars to victims Nasa
New York, Nov. 9 (EFE) .- A plot related to the theft of more than 42 million dollars that were intended to provide aid to victims of the Holocaust was broken up and 17 people were indicted by the fraud, said today U.S. prosecutors in a statement.
The research, carried out by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI, for its acronym in English) revealed that six workers of the Conference on Jewish Material Claims against Germany, based in New York, processed thousands of fraudulent requests for assistance addressed to the victims from Nazi extermination.
The Conference, a nonprofit organization, administers various foundations that provide compensation to Holocaust victims, including The Hardship Fund and The Article 2 Fund, financed by the German government.
"If there was any reason that could be expected to be immune to greed and criminal fraud, that was the Conference, which every day helps thousands of elderly and economic problems suffered Nazi persecution, "the prosecutor said today the Southern District of New York, Preet Bharara.
According to the prosecution showed, for almost a decade more than 5,500 workers approved fraudulent applications people who had not suffered the Nazi Holocaust and instead stayed with a part of the aid offered by the Conference.
"Each of the defendants played a crucial role in creating, processing and approving these requests fraudulent," said the official Janice Fedarcyk FBI, which also called for those accused of "greedy".
In December 2009 the organization detected irregularities in the process of granting such aid, so she contacted the authorities, who eventually uncovered this case when 11 people were arrested and a total of 17 were charged with fraud related charges.
The defendants, who were posing as victims of the Holocaust, have altered their birth certificates and passports, mostly born after the Second World War and one of them not Jewish.
